And the award for most lusted-after material this year goes to: low-maintenance, eco-friendly, gleaming stainless steel. Lately it’s everywhere we look, and nowhere more so than the kitchen, where—as chefs have known for decades—it manages to be durable, hardworking, and elegant all at once.Take, for example, the kitchen in a family’s holiday apartment in the Alpine village of Courmayeur in northern Italy. Here, stainless steel is “the absolute protagonist,” according to kitchen makers Abimis. Have a look:Photography by Josè Limbert, courtesy of Abimis.Above: The home is the Alpine getaway of a young couple with two children. And since the apartment is on the top floor of a historic building, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that would bring in a contemporary sensibility but still fit into an “old mountain house”, as Abimis describes it. The company’s Atelier kitchen, done in head-to-toe stainless, fit the bill: clean and modern, but with a final touch—hand-sanding—that gives it a “silky”, patinated, not-too-cold look.Above: The kitchen was made to measure, then welded on site. At far left, floor-to-ceiling cabinets provide extra storage space and separate the kitchen from the laundry area just beyond.Above: Squared-off doors offer “a clean-cut and tidy appearance,” but they conceal a futuristic design inside: rounded-off cabinet interiors with no 90-degree angles for easy wipe-downs.Above: The backsplash and counters get the stainless treatment, too. Note the streamlined recessed pulls in lieu of cabinet hardware.Above: The couple, who are avid cooks, positioned the cooktop by a window for a spectacular mountain view. For more, see our first post on Abimis, back in 2016:: An All-Stainless Design in a Paris Loft.Plus more stainless kitchens we love:N.B.: This story originally appeared on January 18, 2024 and has been updated.(Visited 6,271 times, 2 visits today)
